Quick note: An easier way to erase white background is to use:
Layer > Transparency > Color to Alpha
This lets you quickly remove any color you choose (default it white).

I remember getting the gimp a LONG time ago and being soooo confused. ;-; There aren't a lot of tuts about it around, so I'm sure this will be helpful to a LOT of people.

Nice tutorial. :w00t!: I have been using Gimp for a while now (too cheap to actually buy anything else) and I really like it.

Quick note: An easier way to erase white background is to use:
Layer > Transparency > Color to Alpha
This lets you quickly remove any color you choose (default it white).
Anyway, just a thought.
